The new Mazda RX-9 seems to be a vehicle made more of myth and legend and less of metal and motor. However, after what seems like years of speculation the revival of Mazda’s Wankel-powered sports car is finally making its greatly anticipated debut. The model was first teased at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show in concept form, it featured short overhangs and a stubby rear. But with the launch date set for early 2020, Mazda has had a solid five years to bring the publics hope and dreams for this much desired vehicle to life.
As for a new rotary engine, there seems to be a toss-up among those in the know as to which way the manufacturers will lean, some say that the reports they’ve heard indicate that it could be a turbocharged 1.6-liter two-rotor unit, dishing out around 400 HP. While others claim to have heard it could be a hybrid rotary engine, with roughly 450 HP. All we know is, regardless of the engine choice, we’re just dying to get our hands on the steering wheel of what is undoubtedly going to be the car of the year!
